The Misogyny of Old Smoke
The analysis of the designs of the cigar boxes focuses mainly on the typographic styles and choices that were made. The decorative, elegant, Victorian-style font was used to create a fantasy-like feel for the men it was marketed toward. The bold sans-serif fonts were used for the text speaking directly to the consumers, like the text for the descriptions of the cigars. In each spread the color palette, motifs, and fonts were directly inspired by the cigar boxes that were analyzed. This project was created to educate viewers on the lesser-known negative aspects of design history.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
This design work was created with the use of various physical media, like felt, cardstock, and other paper which was photographed and translated into a digital interactive format. My mood board and both my lo-fi and high-fi wireframes were created on Figma. The serif font in the poster was selected because of its classic form yet playful nature. The decorative, sans-serif font in the website was chosen because its lack of uniformity and handwritten-like form. This form of media was specifically chosen to reflect and represent the childlike, whimsical nature of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

How to Rizz
This video was inspired by black and white silent films but is an avant-garde way of expressing the dialogue. The title font was inspired by many other silent films from the early 20th Century. It is meant to feel elegant and decorative. As for the dialogue screens, I chose a font that felt vintage and clean. The music, “Maple Leaf Rag” by Scott Joplin adds to the overall humorous and whimsical vibe of the entire film. This project is meant to appeal to the younger generations of today with the textual content, but engaging them with the overall design.
Sor Juana
Sor Juana is an alternative rock band from San Francisco, California. Andrea Duque (vocals), Julian Myers (lead guitar, keyboard), Joey DiLeva (drums), Joe Woodley (guitar), Alejandro Manzo (bass).
Layout and Composition Study
In this project, each student in my typography class was given the same text and limitations per work. The limitations varied per assignment in terms of typeface, alignment, type style, spacing, etc.
Lance Wyman Book
This book was my first big design project, working with layout, composition, typography, and publication work for the first time. The linear elements were created to reflect the dynamic linear aspects of Wyman’s work. There was a minimal addition of color to emphasize the featured works in the book. This was created using the Adobe platforms Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
Six-word Memoir
“I started drinking my coffee black,” was created with the theme of growing-up in mind. The statement reflects the realization of entering adulthood, however, the illustration reflects the lasting playfulness and color that remains. Despite entering adulthood, there is still a youthful, energetic spirit present. This piece was primarily inspired by Milton Glaser’s Bob Dylan poster, imitating similar forms and using the same color palette. Six-word Memoir is meant to draw in viewers with its artistic elements but encourage them to stay and understand the association of the text and overall design.
Glitch Art
These works feature the same photo from a time in my early youth when I took an ambulance for the first time. As a reflection of how I try to keep situations like these light hearted for myself, I used the generation feature on Photoshop to add a chain around my neck, adding some humor into the image as well as different text for each of the three photos. Then, unsing the app Audacity, I generated sound waves from the image and created glitch affects by randomly altering the data in the photo. In addition to making alterations on Audacity, I also inspected the code of the image file itself and altered the code directly.
Epi Stepi
Epi Stepi is a walkathon followed by an event with live music, food trucks, and activities. The website features five different pages: home, about, schedule, merchandise, and FAQ. The aesthetic vibe that it portrays was inspired by colorful, vintage events, while also incorporating contemporary design elements. This piece was created with the hope of empowering the viewers to take action toward raising awareness for its cause, or for any other cause possible.
